After a month on the critical list at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, a Memorial High School student died on Thursday.
Jael Ortega, 17, suffered severe head and chest injuries in an auto collision on Friday, 26 February. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at the highly regarded hospital, Mr Ortega slipped into a coma a week ago from which he never awoke.
Staff and students at Port Arthur’s Memorial High School gathered yesterday evening to pay tribute to the popular honors student. Senior Counselor Darla Shirley said, “I just can’t believe it. He was a kid with such a bright future, and we were desperate for him to pull through. It’s a tragedy.”
In related news, police will not press serious charges against the three students who were questioned on DUI charges after the collision. Officer David Beran of the Port Arthur police said, “Although two of the minors had clearly been drinking, it seems that the driver was sober. Two students have been charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and fined. We sympathise with the family of Mr Ortega, but it seems clear that this was a terrible accident and not the result of drunk driving.”
